How to improve uneven skin texture (and
brighten your complexion at the same time)

Your skin’s texture and your overall complexion are sort of symbiotic – work on one, you’re accidentally helping the other. It’s like skincare serendipity. It’s time to go deep – literally, into the skin’s dermis – to figure out the cause of textured skin, and discuss the products made to boost your complexion.

THE STEP-By-step skincare routine
that’s made for you

Skincare is our thing, naturally, so this routine is thorough. Whatever you choose to add to your regime, make sure to patch test first, then introduce each product at two week intervals. That way, you can be sure of which products are (and aren’t) suited to your skin.

1. Cleanse your face

The first cleanse isn’t quite the deepest. This cleanse removes makeup and any dirt/grime/general nastiness that’s built up on your skin throughout the day. Use something that gently removes impurities but doesn’t pull on the skin. Faace Dull Cleanser is ideal for a first cleanse, or when you don’t have time for a second. It can even be used as a 10 min face mask for a more intensive deep clean.

2. Cleanse your face, again

The double cleanse. This time, you’re cleansing an almost clean base, so it’s a good idea to choose a product formulated with ingredients that do something, like antioxidants and superfoods. For that, we’d use Antipodes Juliet Skin Brightening Gel Cleanser. (And you can thank Manuka Honey for your new-found glow).

3. Exfoliate next

Chemical exfoliants, you know the drill. Triology’s Vitamin C Polishing powder is a non-abrasive powder with active vitamin C, that gently buffs away dead skin cells for softer, brighter skin. Mix ½ teaspoon of the powder with warm water to activate, then rub the cleansing milk across your skin. Look, it’s vitamin C. You know how we feel about vitamin C.

4. Add a serum

Because of their tiny molecule-makeup, serums are able to penetrate the skin’s barrier even deeper to provide hydration. Look for a serum packed with antioxidants to increase elastin production and brighten your complexion. Since vitamin C is the ideal partner for textured skin, choose one that’s full of it – Balance Me’s Vitamin C Repair Serum is our top pick.

5. Then, mask

It’s Sunday, you’re in the bath, you’ve got a book on the go. You know a face mask completes the picture. Tata Harper’s Resurfacing Mask works a lot like a traditional peel to deeply purify the skin and decongest by removing surface debris (dead skin cells). Apply a thick layer of the BHA treatment to a clean face, leave on for 20-30 minutes, and rinse with warm water. 100% natural and instantly effective.

6. Now moisturise

Rough-feeling skin will gulp down moisturiser, so make sure it’s thirst-quenching enough. Choose a product with ingredients that will hydrate all day, not just until lunchtime. We like the Prebiotix Hydrating Gel Moisturiser by Juice Beauty. It’s, quite literally, juicy; formulated with a rich base of organic grape, apple, and aloe.

7. Retinol (if you really need it)

This hyped up vitamin A derivative causes skin cells to shed at a faster rate, so it helps with all kinds of anti-aging skin concerns – from increasing elastin production, to smoothing out fine lines. Because it’s so powerful, it can also be really irritating if it’s used incorrectly. Try this one from Evolve, and introduce it slowly, once a week ideally. If your skin seems to like it, build up to using it two or three times a week.

(Not-so-optional) extras:

Say it louder for the people at the back – WEAR SPF. Whatever your skin type, wherever you live, however much time you spend in bed, wear SPF. Even the gloomiest days emit harmful UV rays. So, if you’re thinking that sun protection isn’t a priority for textured skin – wrong – the only thing to question is which one to buy. We’d say this one from Everyday Humans is pretty great, if you’re wondering.

Before we leave you to shop your new skincare routine (tag us @naturisimo when your goodies arrive), two things: firstly, never feel pressured to ‘change’ how your skin looks. Some people hate wrinkles, others see them as laughter lines. So long as you do what makes you feel good, that’s all that matters; and secondly, it’s crazy how beneficial sleep is for the skin, so don’t skimp on it. Give yourself a really (really) good night’s sleep so that your cells can renew and repair. Snoozing twice is encouraged.
