We spoke to S5 Skincare - who source their ingredients in some of the most extreme parts of the planet such as Antarctica, the Wadi Desert in Egypt and the high mountains of Tibet - about keeping skin healthy through the harsh winter weather. Winter is well and truly here and if you couldn't tell from the frosty mornings and the need to dig out your warmest coat, you may also have noticed a change in your skin. Harsh winter weather can play havoc with our skin, leaving it dry, inflamed and irritated. The extreme temperature variations of very cold air outside and warm, dry air inside can suck all of the moisture out of our skin. On top of that, central heating also dries out the skin. This drop in humidity can compromise the barrier layer– requiring intense hydration to repair the damage. Chill winds can also create a physical stress for our skin. This particularly affects sensitive skin, causing an immune response that can create rashes, hives, dryness and soreness. So, all in all, as much as we love the festive cheer, winter can really be a nightmare for our skin. This is why we need to make sure that we keep our skin protected from the inside and the outside.



Don't be afraid to switch up your usual cleanser. As the season changes, your skin may change, so look for alternative options. Using an oil-based cleanser that is either rinsed or wiped off the skin can help dry skin. This type of cleanser does not wash the natural oils from the skin, leaving the skin’s barrier layer intact, soothing and nourishing dry skin.


Make sure you are moisturising, this will build a strong barrier layer which is essential to defend skin against the environmental damage that winter causes. Use a good quality, rich moisturiser which contains hydration ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid and natural oils.


Boost winter skin care from the inside by making sure cells retain enough moisture when it is very dry and cold outside.


Water acts like a moisturiser, but from the inside out so ensure you drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.


Make sure that you include plenty of essential fatty acids in your diet. These acids help to maintain the skin's natural oil barrier, which is vital in keeping skin hydrated and plump. Some foods packed with fatty acids that we can recommend are:

  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Dark Green Leafy Veg
  • Dark Chocolate (hurray!)
  • Eggs
