Skin & Tonic was created in 2014 with a goal to create truly green, sustainable products which were firstly about the people and the planet. They do things simply, ethically and responsibly and use no more then 7 ingredients in each product, which is a philosophy that we love! We caught up with co-founder Sarah Hancock to find out more about Skin & Tonic and their growing range of products. What’s a typical day like for you at Skin & Tonic HQ? After a good breakfast, Josh (co founder & my boyfriend) and I always start with a debrief of our on-going work so that we can best prioritise our day. I’ll then walk over to the Skin & Tonic HQ in Hackney Wick and brief our team on the day/week ahead. All of our products are crafted by hand in small batches, so there is always lots to be done in terms of managing production and our output, as well as working on new product development. In the afternoon I often pop into central London for meetings with our retailers, partners, agencies and plan future projects. I’m also constantly on social media, chatting away with our customers about all things wellness and skincare! I usually try to stop working & checking my emails by 8pm for 30mins of yoga to help me unwind. I will then cook up supper and then usually collapse on the sofa in front of Netflix! banner_06Jul16_1 Your ingredients are organically certified & highly therapeutic and you only use a maximum of 7 per product. Why was this so important to you? I suffer from Endometriosis (an endocrine disease that effects the reproductive system) suffering with this kind of illness inspired me to live a cleaner and healthier lifestyle. I was shocked at the amount of endocrine disrupting chemicals in skincare and personal care products. So I quit my job retrained in skincare formulation and aromatherapy and decided to launch a totally transparent, certified organic skincare line. I believe everyone has the right to know and understand what they are putting onto their skin, where the ingredients have come from and why they are so effective. We pride ourselves on using incredible, certified organic, therapeutic ingredients that come from small, local European producers - no cheap fillers, no harsh preservatives and no synthetics. We believe ‘less is more’ when it comes to your skin and that philosophy is at the heart of Skin & Tonic. Do you have a favourite essential oil or blend to work with? I have been obsessed with plants and essential oils ever since I trained as an aromatherapist at Neal’s Yard Remedies. I use them frequently and in a way that is responsive to how I feel each day. A favourite blend of mine would be Rose, Geranium, Clary Sage and Frankincense for its hormone balancing, antispasmodic, supportive and grounding properties. Skin & Tonic has a unisex feel to it, which is very refreshing (& helps with packing when you’re going on holiday with your partner!). Was this deliberate or did this evolve naturally because of your partnership with Josh? It was deliberate. I used to go into friends homes and there would be a bathroom shelf full of women’s beauty products and a bathroom shelf full of men’s grooming products. We are of the mindset that if you feed the skin from both the inside and out, providing it with the right nutrients, then you don't need products for each gender. Both women and men can enjoy our product line. banner_06Jul16_2 A Gin & Tonic inspired the name of your company, but what drink are you looking forward to sipping on as the weather improves and where will you be when you drink it? I’m looking forward to sipping a refreshing glass of home made lavender lemonade (recipe below), sat having a picnic with good friends in Victoria Park this summer.
  • 6 organic lemons
  • 4 table spoons dried lavender flowers
  • 4 teaspoons of raw honey (or to taste)
  • 500ml of water
We love your Calm Clean as it has got so many uses. What gives this balm its lovely colouring? It is the chamazulene in the German Chamomile that gives the oil a beautiful colour. German Chamomile has incredible anti inflammatory, analgesic and anti-allergenic properties. We find it is a highly effective oil for those with dry and sensitive skin conditions. It works as a beautiful cleansing balm but you can use it to soothe dry skin patches, moisturise the lips, tame fly-away hair or to remove make up. banner_06Jul16_3 What is your career mantra? Keep hold of your vision – it’s the most important thing you have when creating a business. Stick to what you believe in and don’t be afraid to stand out of line. Be positive with, and kind to, all those you meet along the way. Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? Follow your instinct and keep hold of your vision: it's more powerful than you can imagine! Build a community: we couldn't have launched Skin & Tonic without the incredible support and inspiration we received from family, friends, and friends of friends, our team, beauty bloggers, press contacts and buyers. They all believed in our vision and wanted to help and to us that has been so valuable, we are very grateful. What’s next for Skin & Tonic? We have some very exciting product launches coming up (you heard it here first!) and we are looking to continue expanding our team and our business both in the UK & Internationally. It is great to see so many people getting behind small, natural skincare brands. We feel very lucky to be part of this amazing community.
