Rawganic story began in 2006, when Stephen Ley sold his company, which was a leading manufacturer of medical products, which he founded in 1984. Following a brief holiday, Stephen met with Dr Nigel Brassington, a chemist who had worked with Robinson Healthcare. Stephen needed technical help with his ideas for cosmetics and toiletries formulated using mainly organic ingredients. Most products then available avoided organic ingredients completely. Some contained certified organic extracts. Stephen’s idea was to produce a range made mainly using organic ingredients – this is the concept behind the Rawganic range.
Martin Wright, who helped launch Maybeline cosmetics in the UK, has now joined Stephen and Nigel to help build the sales side of the Rawganic business. Marshall Curtis Ltd (Rawganic) is a small team, and every member of that team plays a crucial part. Whether it's making sure orders are dealt with accurately and quickly or ensuring that exacting quality standards are maintained as the venture grows and develops. Rawganic Organic Standards:
- High Standards: Organic ingredients come from trusted sources. All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year. The organic standards are laid down in European law.
- Safe Preservatives: Only a limited range of safe preservatives is allowed in Rawganic organic toiletries and cosmetics, using Soil Association approved preservatives.
- Avoid Pesticides: Organically grown ingredients reduce your exposure to potentially harmful pesticides. 331 pesticides can be routinely used in non-organic farming and residues are often present in non-organic ingredients. Over 40% of all non-organic fruit, vegetables and bread tested in 2005 contained pesticides according to the UK Government’s Pesticide Residues Committee.
- No Hidden Costs: Compare this with the £120m that tax payers fork out to pay for chemicals to be removed from drinking water, mainly as a result of the pesticides used in farming.
- Good for Wildlife and the Environment: Overall organic farming supports more farmland wildlife than non-organic farming. The UK government has said that it is better for wildlife, causes lower pollution from sprays, produces less carbon dioxide - the main global warming gas - and less dangerous wastes.
