Dr Hauschka: Organic + Biodynamic Skincare
Dr Hauschka developed skin care manufacturing processes in which he incorporated the rhythms of nature. Even today Dr Hauschka still use these processes to obtain water-based extracts of medicinal herbs which remain stable without the use of alcohol, and to make the herbal essences for Dr Hauschka products which contain all the vitality of the plants. Dr Hauschka: The Story
Dr Hauschka skincare line was created in 1935 by German chemist Dr Rudolf Hauschka and cosmetologist Elisabeth Sigmund. Hauschka had met Rudolf Steiner in 1924 at an anthroposophical summer conference, and was heavily influenced by his philosophies regarding the rhythms and cycles of nature. Hauschka believed this also applied to skincare, and felt products should allow skin to function as it should, assisting and supporting rather than taking over. Realising that for a truly holistic approach they needed to know the origins of their ingredients, they began cultivating land adjacent to their headquarters. This practice continues today, using biodynamic and sustainable farming methods to grow over 150 different plants. Any ingredients sourced externally are subject to strict criteria and quality testing, in order for the finished products to be BDIH certified.
Central to Dr Hauschka unique, scientific approach is a cleansing ritual unlike any other in the world of beauty. During daily cleansing, use press and roll movements to naturally work with the skin cell reproduction and lymphatic pathways in your skin. Whilst removing surface dirt and impurities this process aids the natural excretion of toxins and congestion without damaging the outermost, protective layer of your skin. Within only 30 days of beginning our cleansing ritual, you will have laid the foundations for picture-perfect skin that can stay just that way for a lifetime.
WALA Heilmittel, the manufacturer of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, characterises quality by the interaction of tradition with modern state-of-the-art production processes. In 1924, Viennese chemist Dr. Rudolf Hauschka (1891-1969) travelled to the Netherlands and attended the anthroposophic summer conference in Arnheim. Here, he met Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). Hauschka had several conversations with the founder of Anthroposophy and asked him what, in his opinion, life was. Steiner answered: 'Study rhythms, rhythm is the carrier of life.' For many years, Hauschka dwelled on this answer and eventually applied it in his medical research in 1929. At the time he was working at the Clinical and Therapeutic Institute in Arlesheim, Switzerland. He had been invited here by anthroposophic physician Dr. Ita Wegman (1876 -1943) with a view to developing a natural technique for manufacturing medicine; without the need for alcohol as a preservative.
With Steiner's answer in mind, Rudolf Hauschka integrated natural polar changes such as light/dark, warm/cold, movement/calm in an extraction process for medicinal herbs - rhythmic changes that enhanced natural preservation, thereby helping to counter the decomposition process. The idea was a winner: his aqueous extracts – initially using Rose petals – kept for many years without the need to add preservatives, as was previously the case.
Together with a team of anthroposophic doctors, led by Ita Wegman, Rudolf Hauschka developed a series of medicines based on these aqueous medicinal herb extracts. The doctors using the treatment were so enthusiastic about its effectiveness that Hauschka opened a laboratory in Ludwigsburg in 1935 so that he could manufacture sufficient quantities of the new medicines. He named the new company after the qualities that play a key role in the rhythmic manufacturing process: Warmth and Ashes and Light and Ashes (WALA). Many of the WALA anthroposiphical (homoeopathic) medicines are available in the UK today.
Even today, employees at the WALA plant laboratory still produce medicinal herb extracts – mother tinctures – using the methods developed by Rudolf Hauschka. The technique has since been included in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia for German-speaking countries. The mother tinctures are used by WALA employees to produce the homeopathically potentised ingredients for WALA medicines. Similar rhythmic processes play a role in the manufacture of essences and oil extracts.
Dr Hauschka Skin Care was born some years later. In 1962 Rudolf Hauschka wanted to extend the WALA product range by adding an exceptional type of cosmetic that worked on a unique proposition: rather than simply surface-treating the uppermost layers of the skin, his approach considered the skin - the body’s largest organ - as a whole, supporting its every need on every level. He wrote a letter to cosmetologist Elisabeth Sigmund, also from Vienna. Hauschka was so enthusiastic about her reply, which was filled with exceptional ideas about new approaches to cosmetics, that he invited her to Eckwälden, Germany, where WALA is based.
In a phase of intensive work, the new WALA skin care range was developed by Hauschka and Sigmund, with a team of pharmacists, chemists, anthroposophical doctors and cosmetologist Elisabeth Sigmund.
In 1967, the range came onto the market, originally sold under the name Kosmetik-Praparate nach Elisabeth Sigmund – Cosmetic Preparations by Elisabeth Sigmund – and later as Dr.Hauschka Skin Care. The original range contained a number of products that we still know and love today, including multi-award winning Cleansing Cream, Rose Day Cream and Rhythmic Night Conditioner.
Famous the world over today, the Dr. Hauschka Skin Care range extends to over 120 products, from face and body care products to intensive hair care, body washes, bath oils and make-up. The products use only 100% natural ingredients and contain no synthetic fragrances, colours or preservatives. Our pure plant extracts are still created in water rather than alcohol, so as to not affect their purity, potency or effectiveness.
Dr. Hauschka dedicates considerable amount of time and research into the development of every product. As one of the original natural beauty brands, Dr Hauschka has been incredibly innovative in developing natural products before they became fashionable, motivated purely by a genuine desire to align the health and care of the skin.
